Mr. S.K.Chopra, an eminant tourism legend delivered a talk on “Punjab Tourism Management and Importance of Chandigarh as Tourism Junction for the Northern States”. He said that large number of people from Punjab had gone abroad in search of new avenues of income, after the land holdings of the farming community shrunk due to divisions amongst siblings. Most of them were genuine immigrants to foreign countries and acquired the status of NRI and made their mark in the respective countries of their settlement. These NRI come to India as tourists and visit various places of their roots in Punjab.
He regretted that NRI are not treated with care by the Custom departments at the Airports in India and many of them are cheated by persons conducting tourist services. This leaves a bad taste in their mind about their own country of origin. He said that Government should set up a a separate department for guiding the NRIs to visit various places of their Choice in Northern India.
He said that Chandigarh is an ideal place to act as a junction for the NRI or foreigners tourists to plan their tourist routes in Northern India. Chandigarh has all the facilities for the stay of tourist comfortably and is accessible to all important places of importance, such as Himachal, J & K, Leh and Ladhak, Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Pinjor, Renuka Lake, Kurukshtra and other such religious places and of attraction for the tourist. However, he rued that Punjab has not preserved places and monuments of its heritage importance for the attraction of the tourist.
